Karamanolis creates symbol-rich works that explore the ambivalent and the other - both human and non-human - through surreal figures and mythological references. His raw canvases merge Eastern Mediterranean symbolism with contemporary elements, invoking the subconscious and exploring cultural identity beyond logic or control. Focusing on memory, time, and shared myth.

Context

With bright crispy colours that assist the few Attic-style black lines, this legacy is connected with ideas that demand to exist
beyond normal control. Amalgamated into the surreal these are the subterranean entities that exist in the psyche of us all, just beneath the surface of the waking day.

Notes

He studied at the Athens School of Fine Art and Hildesheim University, Germany. Notable exhibitions include The Breeder Playroom (Athens), Kunstbüro and Kunstraum am Schauplatz (Vienna), State of Concept (Athens), Lepsien Art Foundation (Düsseldorf), and Nerima Art Museum (Tokyo).
