Holstein is known for his intricate and surreal compositions that often explore themes of transformation and the subconscious. He studied at the Cooper Union Art School in NY from 1954 to 1957. In 1958 he worked at the graphic studio of Stanley Hayter in Paris. He exhibited his work at home and abroad, makes artist's books and published his drawings in the weekly magazine Vrij Nederland.

Context

Holstein's work from the 1960s reflects a period of experimentation with form and narrative, blending figuration with abstraction. The work 'Metamorfose' is a playful and surreal 1960s lithograph exploring visual transition. A version is held in the collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
