Essl lives and works in Paris. He discovered photography as a child in the darkroom his father had at home and studied at the University of Art in Linz, Austria, and at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d’Art in Paris. He offers a poetic journey to the viewer’s imagination, an intimate and luminous diary of daily life.

Context

Essl’s notable project 'Le Château Rouge No 1', a photographic essay that begins at a Paris Metro station and extends to various European locations, exploring the nuances of daily environments. Published with Kehrer Verlag in 2015, Le Château Rouge N°1 was awarded the Photo Folio Review prize at the Rencontres d’Arles in 2015 and nominated for the German Photo Book Award in 2016.

Exhibited in major fairs such as Paris Photo and Photo London. Received major grants and awards from the Fine Art Photography by the Austrian minister of culture (2024), Acquisition of the Austrian Federal Collection of Photography, Museum der Moderne Salzburg (2023), Critic’s Pick, Photo London (2017) etc.
