Art, Jewelry & Bags Auction - 2 & 3 December 2024
In our latest auction NRC Art, Jewellery & Bags, we were pleased to see strong results once again. Below is a summary of some of the noteworthy prices, including auction fees.
Within Post-War and Contemporary art, there was a lot of interest in work by both international and Dutch artists. For the iconic bronze sculpture Single Whip by Ju Ming the hammer came down at €90.734 and for Summer by Zhuang Hong Yi at €8.426. Sol LeWitt's 1971 Fold drawing sold for €20.260 and works by Bram Bogart were also in high demand: Groen rood from 1963 was sold for €23.332, a small earlier painting for €5,000, and a colourful edition for €4.667, more than four times the low estimate. Pierre Soulages‘ edition Eau-forte VI changed hands for €8,426 and Wim Oepts’ sunny southern French landscape from 1957 for €24.058. There were many bidders for works by Niele Toroni (€4.408 and €3.799), William Leavitt (€5.704 and €2.595) and Robert H. Cumming (€4.667). Among the Dutch, we saw the greatest activity around the works of JCJ Vanderheyden (€19.443), Rob van Koningsbruggen (€4.926, €4.306 & €4.148) and Klaas Gubbels (€7.130).
Cobra artists were prominently featured in the auction, and, as in previous sales, their works attracted significant interest. The works on paper by Corneille sold for €9.074, €7.778 and €5.185, those by Karel Appel for €7.130, €5.704 and €4.148, the early painting by Eugène Brands achieved the good result of €9.722, the fine watercolour La discussion (1984) by Constant sold for €6.481 and the paintings by Theo Wolvecamp for €8.231 and €4.148.
The auction included a strong selection of modern and nineteenth-century artworks. For example, the unique Groen-geel paard by Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman fetched €25.324, two paintings by Sal Meijer €9.722 and €8.426, a charming watercolour by Piet van der Hem €5,185 and Jan Sluijters' portrait of his daughter Liesje with doll €12.962. Suze Robertson’s moody still life with two smoked herrings sold for €11.396, a colourful gouache by Marc Chagall dedicated to Willem Sandberg for €9.722, a small but fine oil study by David Oyens for €3.889 and, finally, after fierce bidding, the museum-quality painting Figures on the beach by Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch sold for €27,857.
The jewellery category experienced the highest interest since we began organizing auctions in this field a year ago, with nearly all lots selling. Some very good results included Bibi van der Velden's enchanting jewellery (€5.825, €3.111, €3.111, €2.857 and €2.463), a gold retro tank bracelet (€4.408), a Zolotas double-headed lion bangle (€3. 371), a gold necklace with three key pendants by Tiffany & Co. (€3.111), small gold pair of double C diamond set earrings by Cartier (€1.686) and a remarkably high result for Anneke Schat's gold pendant and ring set (€ 4.148). There were also some good results within the designer bag selection, including €4.408 for a 1948 Hermès Kelly 28 and €1.815 for a small Wallet on Chain by Chanel.
We very much look forward to your consignments for the next auctions.
