Mentzel is best known as a staff photographer of NRC Handelsblad, but also worked for magazines like Time, Life and Newsweek and for The New York Times. Large collections of his work have been acquired by the Rijksmuseum, Atlas van Stolk, Het Nederlands Fotomuseum and by Delta Airlines and KLM.
