Auction record for Floris Verster
Once € 40,000 was paid for a painting by Floris Verster. Now this result is in the past. At a recent NRC auction of 11 June the bidding ended at € 72,500 (incl. costs, hammer price € 57,000), and this time for a wax crayon drawing with a starting bid of € 10,000. Het Warmonderhek, a work from 1894, which had disappeared for almost 90 years, is considered to be a highlight in the oeuvre of the Leiden artist and one of the earliest examples of Dutch modernism.
More museum pieces emerged from the collections of NRC readers. Some of them actually ended up in public institutions:
Naked John and Yoko go to the Sex Museum on the Ramblas
Two explicit photos taken by John Lennon and Yoko Ono with a self-timer are now available in Barcelona - also for a Dutch holidaymaker. The Museo de la Erotica added them for more than € 3,300 (starting bid € 300) to the museum's already exuberant collection.
Leiden University Library buys a collection of cartoons from Indonesia
One of the most remarkable lots of the last auction was a small collection of original watercolours from 1947 that call for action against the Dutch. They resurfaced after almost 70 years in an estate of a Dutch Marechaussee. The Leiden University Library is very excited about this acquisition because the cartoons are unique and there is virtually nothing to compare them to. They had to fight for this lot though - bidding started at € 800 but the final price exceeded € 3,800 (incl. costs).

AMSTERDAM — In the late 1950s, a young Kenyan man named Barack Hussein Obama wrote a series of books in his native language, Luo, for a program to promote adult literacy in Africa. The coordinator of that program, Elizabeth Mooney, singled him out as particularly talented, and helped him apply to an international study program […]
The sale of books, maps & manuscripts, selected from more than 2000 consignments by readers of the leading Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad, was a great success. Bidding for some of the lots resulted in a fierce battle. For example, a score of 10-year-old Mozart went 60 times higher than the starting bid, from € 100 to € 6.000 […]
