NRC Veilingen 10 ! An unexpectedly lavish anniversary auction

75 Euro at the thrift shop, € 30.000 at NRC Veilingen
Standing on an easel at a thrift store, it was immediately recognized as an exceptional painting by NRC reader Henk Laarman. His guess was confirmed both by the TV programme Tussen Kunst en Kitsch and the Kröller-Müller Museum: it was an unknown pointillistic work by Johan Aarts (1871 - 1934). The market did the rest: the last two persistent bidders brought the price up to more than € 30.000 (including auction costs, also the results below).

Escher: exceptionally fine copy of Puddle
Only after it was taken out of the frame, it became clear how exceptional this copy of Escher's 'Puddle' was. Other bidders saw it as well. The woodcut fetched the record price of € 22.460 long before the auction night.

€ 19.000 for a bedroom rug by Bart van der Leck
There was also a noteworthy interest for a rug by Bart van der Leck. It had always been lying next to the bed of the consigner's mother, but remained in very good condition. The starting bid was only € 500, but the bidders decided otherwise: € 19.000.

Warhol
Less surprising was the fierce battle for an interesting Warholiana collection. The Beatrix, more than € 20.000, and Apollonia, € 19.000, did well as expected. But a real sleeper was a set of three proofs depicting Liz Taylor with a starting bid of just € 600. The buyer had to offer more than € 9.000 to win them. Also an empty soup can, € 1.000, a poster with a pink cow, € 1.900, and a shopping bag with a print of the Campbell Soup can, € 3,817 (!), showed that the interest in Warhol is only growing.

There are of course not only highlights, but also lots that are still available for sale for the minimum price. You can see them all on the aftersale page. Artworks quickly disappear from the list, so make your choice as soon as possible.

Auction record for Floris Verster

Once € 40,000 was paid for a painting by Floris Verster. Now this result is in the past. At a recent NRC auction of 11 June the bidding ended at € 72,500 (incl. costs, hammer price € 57,000), and this time for a wax crayon drawing with a starting bid of € 10,000. Het Warmonderhek, […]
